When "Derrick" Means Football Stats, Not Drilling Equipment: A Procurement Story

Back in March 2024, I sat down with our new procurement intern to evaluate a remanufactured derrick for a drilling contractor we supply. The Lesson: Vague Words Create Vague Results

So we built a checklist. Embarrassingly simple, but it's now the first thing we train new hires on. Every equipment quote gets verified against:

  • The API spec number. For derricks and masts, API 4F covers structural design and API 4G covers inspection and maintenance. If a quote doesn't reference a relevant standard, that's a red flag.
  • The dimensional drawing, checked against our existing foundation and mounting bolt pattern.
  • The working load limit and wind load rating, not just the price.

  • Shipping weight and receiver site access. A 30,000-pound mast doesn't come off a flatbed with a standard forklift.

The question everyone asks is "why can't Google read my mind?" The question they should ask is "why does a steel fabricator post a Halloween costume guide?" Because traffic fuels leads. Vendors build content around high-volume keywords to get their websites in front of buyers, even if the content has nothing to do with their products. The muddier the keyword, the more junk you'll find around the real stuff.

What actually works? Skip the generic search entirely. Go to the manufacturer's website, or use an industry directory like IADC for drilling contractors. Search for the API spec number. You'll get fewer results, but every result will be relevant.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: many supplier websites are optimized for exactly the kind of generic terms that pull in confusion - "derrick," "jack," "costume." They're not trying to mislead you. They just know that buyers start broad, and they want to be the first broad hit you click.

The Numbers Side of This

In the 18 months since we created this checklist, we've caught 47 potential errors. Using a conservative $250 per average error, that's around $11,750 in avoided rework. Take this with a grain of salt - two of the catches were quote errors worth over $2,000 each, so the real number is probably higher. But I didn't track costs carefully until recently.

The September 2022 mistake taught me this lesson the hard way. We approved a verbal quote with no written specifications.
