Derrick buying is not one decision. It’s at least four. The right choice depends on whether you’re building new, repairing existing steel, supporting a mine hoist, or renting for a short window. A new land rig in West Texas and a shaft headframe in Nevada have almost nothing in common except a tall structure and a long lead time.
From the outside, it looks like a derrick is just steel. The reality is a certified load-bearing structure with engineering stamps, inspection history, wind-load calculations, and documentation that can stop a project. Finance doesn’t care that the steel looks fine. They care that the invoice matches the PO and the compliance file is complete.
Scenario A: You need a new land-based drilling derrick for a known site
This is the cleanest scenario, but not the easiest. You have a location, a rig package, and an engineering team that can define loads. Start with the standard, not the salesman. API Spec 4F covers drilling and well servicing structures. If the supplier cannot map their design and manufacturing documentation to API 4F, stop.
Ask for:
- Structural calculations for wind, dead load, live load, and rig-up/rig-down loading
- API monogram or equivalent documentation, if required by your project
