I’m an office administrator who buys safety training for a mid-size utility contractor. My day is a mix of purchase orders, vendor calls, and explaining to operations why every line item looks higher than last year. The keyword list above is not far from a normal one for me. Someone types “derrick,” the search engine brings back a person’s name, an Olympic sport, and a bird—and somehow “difference between a hawk and a handsaw” ends up in the same spreadsheet.

I’m not going to pretend I can tell you the difference between a hawk and a handsaw. What I can tell you is the difference between derrick safety training and digger derrick safety training. Because after a few bad purchases, I finally learned that those two are not the same class.

In our world, the word “derrick” means the mast-and-boom structure used to lift heavy loads. A digger derrick is that same idea, but mounted on a truck with an auger, so the crew can dig holes, set poles, and lift materials in one operation. The manuals look related. The controls are not identical. If they were, the phrase “digger derrick safety training” wouldn’t be a separate course.

When it came time to buy training, I thought a generic derrick course would be enough. It seemed safer and cheaper. That decision cost us time, money, and a little trust with the operations team.

1. Course Scope: The Load-Handling Basics Are Only the Beginning

Most derrick courses cover the fundamentals: load charts, rigging, cable inspection, hand signals, and keeping people out from under suspended loads. If you run a conventional derrick, that’s the core of what your operators need.

A digger derrick course has to go further. The same operator also has to manage:

  • Auger controls and digging torque
  • Setting poles without smashing the pole or the crew
  • Outrigger positioning on uneven ground
  • Hydraulic functions that interact with each other
  • Changes in stability when the auger is in the ground versus when the boom is carrying a load

If you buy only the generic derrick class, you get the lifting half of the story. You don’t get the part that makes a digger derrick more dangerous on a bad day.

2. The Word You Should Look For: Drift

The biggest gap I found was not in load charts. It was the word “drift.”

On a digger derrick, drift means the boom slowly settles after the operator moves the control lever to neutral. It can be caused by hydraulic leakage, a worn valve, or a load that shifts unexpectedly. If nobody teaches the operator how to test for drift—and what to do when it shows up—it can turn a routine pole-setting job into a close call.

The generic derrick course mentioned drift in passing. The digger derrick safety training I eventually bought spent a full session on it. That difference alone justified the extra cost.

3. Trainer Boundaries: Why “We Don’t Do That” Won Me Over

The training vendor who won our business was not the one with the thickest brochure.

I called a general provider first. They told me they could cover “all derrick-type equipment” and gave me a confident, polished pitch. It sounded great—until I asked who on their staff had actually run a digger derrick. The person on the phone hesitated.

Then I called a smaller specialist. He was blunt: “This isn’t our strength—we don’t train crane operators. For a crane, here is who we send people to.”

That should sound counterintuitive. It made me trust him more, not less. I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. A vendor who will tell you what they don’t do is a lot more likely to tell you the truth about what they do.

4. The Hidden Cost of a Paperwork Gap

Here is the part most buyers don’t think about until the invoice hits accounting: documentation.

In 2023, I booked the cheaper general class. The price looked fine—about $3,800 for six operators. But the instructor only spent about twenty minutes on the auger and almost no time on drift. The operations supervisor asked what I’d bought. I looked at the agenda and felt sick. We ended up sending all six through a full digger derrick course two months later.

We also had a vendor one year who couldn’t provide clean course records. Finance rejected part of the expense because the certificate didn’t match the employee list. I ate the cost out of the department budget. Now I verify documentation before I sign anything.

I’m not a compliance lawyer, so I don’t give legal advice. But every vendor I take seriously can tell me which standard applies and where to verify it. 5. Scheduling: Don’t Ignore the Calendar

If you’re buying for an oilfield rig or a completely different regulatory environment, your requirements will be different. Ask the specialist, verify the standard, and look for the trainer who tells you “no” once in a while. That is the one you can trust.
