In that world, the derrick—or, more precisely, the mast—has to tolerate being raised and lowered over and over. You care about travel dimensions, gross vehicle weight, single-line pull, and set-up time. You do not need a giant production derrick when you're drilling 300-foot water wells.
What I check first: whether the mast can self-erect, or if you need a crane on site. A crane adds mobilization cost to every move. If two masts have the same rated hook load, go for the one with better inspection access. I once speced a mast that met every load requirement but didn't have a reachable crown block. Every inspection meant renting a manlift. It worked, but it was dumb. The extra cost appeared every month, in small invoices, for years.
Scenario B: You're Drilling Deep Production Wells
This is the derrick that appears in every oilfield photo: a tall, open lattice tower above the drill floor, rated for heavy hook loads and serious wind. If you're in this scenario, don't even look at a structure that doesn't have API Spec 4F documentation. API 4F governs the design, fabrication, and testing of drilling structures, and it's the difference between a structure you can insure and one you can only pray over.
Ask for the design standard, weld procedure specifications, and third-party non-destructive testing reports. If a vendor says 'our welds are certified' but can't show the procedure, that's a red flag. I've rejected parts that looked fine at first glance because the repair documentation didn't match the qualified procedure. A weld you can't verify is a weld you don't have. In this business, one bad connection at 5,000 feet can cost more than a whole rig.

In this scenario I look for dual braking systems, rope inspection access, corrosion protection, and a structural vibration analysis. The tower's duty cycle has to match the motor's new demand. If the structure doesn't have the life expectancy you need, no amount of horsepower will fix that.

Include the initial price, freight, installation, inspections for five years, and one credible failure event multiplied by its probability. What a Misunderstood 'Standard Derrick' Cost Us
A few years ago, we took an order for a 'standard derrick' and nodded along. The customer meant a derrick that was in stock, ready to go. We meant our standard catalog design that had to be built. Same words, different meanings—found out two weeks later when they asked why delivery was eight weeks instead of two.
